Our Great Hearts team is excited to announce our 2019 Summer Camp! Our full-day summer camp is an experience for children K-5th grade that is reminiscent of traditional camps from our childhood with the same quality you have come to expect from Great Hearts. Each week, scholars will experience hands-on, engaging activities in fine arts, reading, writing, crafts, science, math, and history – all designed to inspire creativity and keep skills sharp over the summer. Each Camp also offers weekly guest presenters, camp songs, and games while fostering lasting friendships. Camps Start June 3rd. Summer Camp runs from 8:15am to 6:00pm Monday through Friday.
Week 1 (June 10-14) ~ Exploration Station
It was John Muir that said, “With every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.” This week campers will receive more than their share of nature and all the fascinating wonders that it holds. Our campers will get to walk among five different habitats of earth – the Arctic Circle, the Amazon Rainforest, the Great Barrier Reef, the Sahara Desert, and the Andes Mountains. Campers will explore brine shrimp, symbiotic relationships, extreme climates, the affect of altitude on our bodies, and more! On Friday there will be a presentation to showcase the vast explorations experienced through the week. Parents and guests are invited to attend!
Week 2 (June 17-21) ~ Living Literature
Stories let us take our imagination to new worlds leaving our current one behind. Characters become friends and we can experience life with them. Each day our campers will enter a storybook world. They will encounter the wild and survival skills in The Jungle Book; farming and friendship in Charlotte’s Web; bravery and honor with the Knights of the Round Table in King Arthur; a revival of nature and spirit in The Secret Garden; and monkeys, munchkins, and the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz. Activities for each day will revolve around the storybook theme and end with a performance at the end of the week for families to come see!
The Kindergarten Readiness summer program is designed to help students transition to the classroom community with ease. Students will practice fundamental skills, following directions and learn teacher expectations. They will learn the joy that comes from learning to demonstrate self-control, build confidence through accomplishing new tasks, and start making new friends. Our veteran teachers will model everything they will need to know about what it means to be a GHNO Scholar! Students will wear the GHNO school uniform as outlined in the family handbook and bring a snack. They may be dropped off as early as 7:45am. The program begins at 8:15am and ends at 12:15pm.
Spalding and Singapore Bootcamp
The Spalding & Singapore bootcamp is for current and new to Great Hearts students who would benefit from remedial work with experienced Great Hearts teachers. Bootcamp runs from 8:15 am to 12:15 pm Monday through Friday. Scholars attending this program have the option to register for Summer Camp for the afternoon at a discounted price.
SPALDING: Students will receive a thorough review of the Spalding phonograms through daily OPR & WPR. Students will also work the most frequently misspelled words from the Ayer’s list and rules applicable to the child’s previous grade level. Teachers will also challenge students to improve letter formation and overall handwriting through daily practice. Finally, students will work on fluency and decoding in an effort to increase reading speed and comprehension.
SINGAPORE MATH: Teachers will use the CPA model to either introduce or reacquaint students to the “why” behind the “how” in the math concepts foundational to the previous year’s level. This may include number sense, number bonds, place value, word problems, math computation, mental math, geometry, and personal finance. Students will also be daily drilled on math facts.
